The 84th Hast-ings International Chess Confer-ence will be held at Horntye Park from Sun 28th Dec until Mon 5th Jan 2009. Maur-een Charles-worth, Mayor of Hastings, and MP Michael Foster, will open the event at 2pm. Play starts at 2.15pm. Chess enthusiasts from all over the world come to play and to watch. There can be three hundred players in action in the hall at peak times. Ami Wallis, receptionist at Horntye Park, said, “The place is heaving for the whole two weeks!” Hastings Borough Council is again sponsoring the event, and additional support comes from several business including K C Computers of London Road. Kim Callow of KC said, “We have supported the Chess Conference for four or five years. We loan them laptops and all their computer equipment free of charge each Christmas. They are always very grateful. We’re pleased that they keep going year after year.”
